Under general supervision, provides a variety of direct care and support services to selected individuals with developmental disabilities. The goals of a DSW are to assist the participant to meet health and safety needs, utilize community resources, and develop natural supports, in accordance with goals identified in the participant’s plan of care.


Provide one to one support to the participant, unless otherwise specified and provide basic assistance to participants in areas including, but not limited to: eating, bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, activities of daily living, preparing meals, housekeeping chores, gaining physical access to the community, promoting adaptive functions, handling money, making purchases, and building or maintaining the person’s circle of support.

Coordinate activities and implement in the home and/or community as identified in the participant’s individualized plan. Assure that activities are engaged in a safe and comfortable environment and that the participant is protected from abuse/neglect at all times, including reporting any suspected incidence of abuse/neglect to the Abilities Unlimited Service Supervisor

Participate in meetings relevant to the participant’s services, supports and welfare.

Thoroughly and professionally, document participant’s progress, program data, program analysis and evaluations, incident reports. Keep information and confidential.

Maintain a positive relationship, including appropriate interactions with the participant.

Maintain positive interactions and communications with Department of Health Case Managers, parents, guardians, community members and other professionals.

Successfully complete and keep up to date on all training and health requirements established by Abilities Unlimited.

Communicate in an effective manner with other direct care professionals and program staff regarding services provided and the needs of the participants.

Ability to work independently under minimum supervision.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma

One year experience working with people with disabilities, OR satisfactory completion of Abilities Unlimited orientation on developmental disabilities/intellectual disabilities.

Minimum age requirements as defined by Hawaii State Labor Laws.

Current tuberculosis (TB) clearance according to Department of Health Standards. Documented proof of negative skin test within the year or normal chest x-ray done within the past 5 years.

Criminal History Clearance according to the Standards set forth by DHS; Abilities Unlimited will help you obtain once hired.

FBI fingerprinting clearance according to the Standards set forth by Dept of Human Services (DHS). Adult Protective Services (APS) and Child Abuse & Neglect (CAN) central registry clearance according to the Standards set forth by Department of Human Services (DHS) will be taken from fingerprint scans automatically. Abilities Unlimited will help you obtain once hired.

Current Adult First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training certification. Abilities Unlimited will help you obtain once hired.

If using vehicle to transport client(s) (not a requirement), must provide valid and current required documents as listed: Driver license, driver abstract, motor vehicle registration, no-fault automobile insurance, safety check.

Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to walk long distances with occasional breaks.
Must be able to remain alert and keep visual on participants at all times.
Ability to run up to 100 Yards is desirable.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
